I haven't used my Weller WPA2 Pyropen in almost a decade.

I'yard doing some work on my wire antennas at present and so need to do some field soldering. When I went to use my Pyropen, it wouldn't light. It still has a full tank of butane from the last apply, but as a precaution I topped information technology off. The piezo-electrical sparker still works. If I remove the shield and manually concur downwardly the gas manifold, I can encounter a spark from the igniter wire to the base of operations of the manifold. That spark seems a chip far from the combustion expanse in the ceramic catalyst cartridge, though. Is the base of the manifold really where the ignition occurs? (I should come back with some photos to better show what I'm talking about.)

Whatever suggestions on how to repair information technology? Do I need a new catalyst cartridge? Is my igniter bollixed up? Anyone have a manual scan for the WPA2?

Walter, thanks for the links. I've seen them and the EDA board post is useless. The video has one tiny flake of useful data that might betoken that I'chiliad missing function of the ignition organization, when he unscrews the rut shield and shows the internals.

Since I showtime posted, I did find some other video that shows more detail of the ignition system:

http://world wide web.youtube.com/watch?v=iu1CcXK6C-Q

Either Weller inverse the design of the igniter in my Pyropen from that shown in the Youtube videos, or else I'one thousand missing the role of the igniter that connects up to the burner.

Hither's a photo of my Pyropen.

And here'south a closer view of the igniter system.

And hither's the igniter in the Pyropens in the Youtube videos.

I don't think I'm missing whatsoever pieces. It just looks like a radically different design to me.

Anyone have any experience fixing these things?

Well, I thought I had a spark, merely information technology turns out to not be reliable. If I allow information technology sit for a while, I get a dainty fat spark the showtime time I push button the ignition button, but so that's it until I let it rest again. So it looks similar something's incorrect with the piezo element :-(

I carried the same model out in the field dorsum in the late 80's/Early on 90's in my tool tote.

For reference, these, (at least when I bought mine) were made by a Japanese company called Master. The sold the very same two Pyropens Weller sold in a cerise colour everywhere else in the world. You might be able to observe some more info searching out the OEM name and problems with these.

Is gas coming out? You might accept a clog in the nozzle; maybe some corrosion from sitting that long.

Aye, I can hear the gas flowing.

I've determined that the piezo chemical element must have weakened. If I squeeze the spark gap closer together, I can get a reliable spark. But I can't find a mode to go on the wire finish of the spark gap in that position.

I recollect I'll buy a butane cigarette lighter and just utilize that to ignite the Pyropen.

My Main Apparatus (made in Japan) cherry and blackness unit, Model UT-100 (the UT-100A offered the piezo starter, just I opted for "manual"/match lighting), worked fine until I got the bright (aka "stupid") idea to use local-bought Butane (Ronson "multi-fil" Ultra butane fuel), which chop-chop acquired it to stop working dependably; its flame would self extinguish and wasn't keeping a steady fuel flow. So I sent it to the U.S. Chief repair depot; they diagnosed that the Ronson-make butane had clogged its filters because the Master-brand fuel (according to them) is processed with finer filtration, to not clog the pen. I oasis't had any problem with it since only feeding it with Master "Ultrathane". My UT-100 looks identical to your pictures, except information technology has no self-igniter parts. I employ both the torch/flame and hot air modes; hot air mode for oestrus-shrink tubing and bending piano hammer (wooden) shanks. Could your problem exist related to an off-brand butane clogging the filters? In defense of Ronson products, its container characterization didn't list its use in these tools; I was as well cheap to postal service-gild the correct Primary fuel.

I have a 1992 pyropen with the sliding burn bedroom and external lighting. I have to hold the chamber open up til it gets cherry-red hot, about a minute before it will burn closed. I tin can't imagine trying to become it lit with a piezo igniter. I had hopelessly chock-full it twice with the cheap butane. Principal and Ronson works well in mine. It looks like the Primary branded gas iron is a ringer for the pyropen should y'all need to replace yours.

Thanks, Dawn and Fred, I wasn't aware of Master Appliance before. Next time I'll purchase from them instead of Weller/Cooper Tools/Noon. It's interesting that DigiKey distributes Master'south line of products.

I tried using some epoxy on the igniter wire to agree the igniter gap closer together. That helped some, simply the spark even so wasn't reliable.

I tried lighting it with a butane grill lighter, but that hasn't worked either. Information technology seems that the fuel period is besides smashing, even with the valve set depression. If I barely crack the on/off valve, I tin regulate the flow low plenty to go on from blowing out the flame. I have used Ronson butane in the Pyropen, so maybe the valve is stuck open from fuel contamination.

I encounter that Weller still lists the WPA2 as a current production on their spider web site, and has it listed on their apartment-rate repair price sheet. It's merely slightly cheaper to send it to Weller for repair than buying a new one: they want $75 plus tax plus shipping one way. But it would feel amend to get mine repaired then to just throw it away and supersede it with a new one. It would be ironic if Weller's repair method would be to supersede it with a new one :-)

Cheers to everyone for their help.
